The project was initiated by THETech in cooperation with CAEDMI university with the aim of ensuring pedestrian safety, a key condition of which was the introduction of STEM education and, moreover, the opportunity for students to manage the project independently from sketch to implementation. The first “Smart Smart CrossWalk” (SCW) in Kyrgyzstan was installed in front of School №1 in the city of Kant in December 2022, with the sponsorship support of Gyeonggi provincial government in Korea and hosted by Khayah Kyrgyzstan public charitable foundation.

A comprehensive analysis of traffic accidents in Kyrgyzstan over the past year revealed that 42% of all incidents involve pedestrians. Meanwhile, the import of passenger cars in Kyrgyzstan has tripled! This shows that pedestrian safety requires active solutions. For more than a year, a talented team of students from KRSU and KSTU has been developing the SPC system in the well-equipped CAEDMI laboratory, and students from the city of Kant participated in its installation.

The SPC is an intelligent pedestrian crossing system that uses renewable energy sources. The system’s main task is to instantly notify the driver of the presence of a pedestrian on the road, which is activated by sensors. The SPC uses LEDs and a strobe light on a pole to notify drivers and an audio signal with a gobo projection (on the ground) to notify pedestrians. Currentry, there are 4 SCW systems in Kant and 2 SCW systems in Bishkek.
