Safe Town Project
2023 – present
Student-designed project
Safe Town Project: This project was initiated by CAEDMI AIT to improve the safety of the community in Kyrgyzstan. As part of the project, Smart Crosswalk Systems have been developed and implemented in Bishkek and Kant since 2022, funded by Gyeong-gi provincial government in Korea. According to the statistics issued by World Health Organization (WHO), United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), and local Government Report, there are many casualties. In 2017, more than 6000 road crashes happened. As a result, 907 people died on the roads, including 104 children.
Now, the developed systems help people including many children safely cross the roads, especially at night when visibility is low and drivers may not easily see pedestrians.
In 2023, CAEDMI AIT and Professor Clint Kohl at Cedarville University agreed to develop a mini safe town as a S.T.E.M. education kit for school students. The purpose of the kit is to promote the ideas of community safety while helping students learn about S.T.E.M. disciplines. During 2023-24, four senior engineering students at Cedarville developed prototype kits under Professor Kohl’s supervision. They have shared some prototype photos and a video.
  1. World Health Organization (WHO): The WHO provides detailed reports on road safety in Kyrgyzstan, including statistics on road crashes and fatalities. For example, in 2017, there were 6,346 road crashes, resulting in 907 deaths, including 104 children1.
  2. United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE): The UNECE Transport Statistics Database includes data on road casualties and deaths in Kyrgyzstan2.
  3. Local Government Reports: Presentations and reports from the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Interior, and the police in Kyrgyzstan also provide insights into the current road safety situation and trends3.
